When Women Go Bald Its a Spiritual Statement?
India.Arie went hairless to the 2003 Grammy awardsIn response to all the hype around Britney's new hairstyle, Fran Golden from The Associated Press has this to say:
"Going hairless in Hollywood is nothing new (Published Sunday, February 25, 2007)
Musicians have been more likely to shave their heads as personal fashion statements.
Erykah Badu got rid of her hair in 2001, saying she wanted to “make room for new things." India.Arie went hairless to the 2003 Grammy awards, explaining that her shaved head indicated “spiritual cleansing." But unquestionably, bald women have not earned the same level of acceptance as purposely bald men have in American society.
Boston hairstylist Mario Russo of Salon Mario Russo said in 26 years of hair styling, he has never fielded a request from a woman to shave her head, unless she was undergoing chemotherapy...." read more HERE

Fran Golden also predicts that NO-ONE will copy-cat Britney - so probably no horrified Mum's tearing their hairs out over their daughter's bald pate! But Britney has a lot of adoring fans - don't be surprised if Fran Golding is wrong!
The question is: are you your hair? India.Arie produced a whole album that says "No". But when you look as good as she did that is an easy attitude to take!

Natalie Portman Has Already Done It!
In an article titled: Why are bald women so shocking? (SMH | Friday, 23 February 2007)
Reuters CLOSE SHAVE: 'It was kind of wonderful to throw vanity away for a bit,' said Natalie Portman of her brush with the clippers for her role in V for Vendetta.
The Sydney Morning Herald takes a look at just why baldness in women has such a dramatic effect. They observe, for example:
"Precisely why a haircut would garner the kind of coverage reserved for changes of US President and aviation disasters has something to do with the enduring shock value of a bald woman... "
They also report that:
In ancient Greece, a shaved female head signified slavery; in France at the end of World War II it indicated collaboration with the Nazis. In US prisons it is still used as a punishment. To signify their distance from the material world, nuns shaved their heads to take orders. Its shock and awe value was harnessed by skinheads and the gay movement. Always it is seen as a stripping of the feminine..." Read the whole article HERE
Yet, as a result of her dramatic change of hair style, Britney is now at the top of the "World's Sexiest Women" polls. And lets face it, Natalie looks fantastic!
Still, I don't plan on following their lead.. Do You?
